Message from Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó on the occasion of the March 15th Celebrations
Dear fellow Hungarians, celebrating Hungarians all over the world!
Honouring the heroes of the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-1849 we can see,
they knew how to decide and how to act.
In their hearts, their homeland was in the first place,
they wanted to break the chains of the imperial oppression,
fought for the country's freedom, independence,
and they sacrificed their lives if it was necessary.
Their heroic acts have transformed history,
had a significant impact on what we think of ourselves
and what others think of us.
History also teaches us that although we always had friends
who we were and are of course thankful to,
at the same time, we can only count on ourselves.
If we do not fight for the country,
if we do not defend the Hungarian national interests,
then no one else will do it for us.
With a national-coloured cockade over our hearts, we proudly remember
the heroes of the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-1849,
who set an example of patriotism for us.
At the same time, we must be able to draw strength from their actions,
because we must also fight our battle,
as our security, our Christian culture and
our national identity are threatened.
The heroes of 1848 did not measure, did not calculate,
was not frightened by the overpower, only the protection of their country
and the national interest were in their minds.
We also have to do this today.
We believe in strong nations’ Europe,
we reject imperialism and attempts to suppress national identity.
Europe must be built on security, Christian culture and
an alliance of strong countries.
In the spirit of this, I wish you all worthy of commemoration!
